A spec sheet is a legal document wearing a marketing costume. Everything on it is technically true; the craft is in what got measured and what got left out. After two decades of buying gear for shops, here is how I read one — and where the weasel words hide.
Denier first, because everyone leads with it. 1000D nylon is more abrasion-resistant than 500D, but denier only measures fiber weight — weave and coating decide whether a bag survives. A well-woven 500D with a real PU coating outlasts a cheap 1000D every time. If the sheet lists denier but not the coating rating in millimeters, the coating is the corner they cut.
Water resistance is the biggest offender. 'Weather-resistant' means nothing measurable. Look for numbers: a 1500 mm PU coating handles rain on a tailgate; taped seams are what make a bag actually submersible-adjacent, and nobody tapes seams without bragging about it. No number, no promise — that simple.
'MOLLE-compatible' deserves its own paragraph. Real MOLLE spacing is standardized; 'compatible' sometimes means the loops are close enough that some pouches sort of fit. If placement matters to you — and on a duty belt it absolutely does — check whether the sheet states the loop spacing. Vagueness there is a return waiting to happen.
Weight is honest but sneaky: check what configuration was weighed. 'From 1.4 kg' usually means the stripped version without the straps, divider, and rain cover you will actually use. And warranty language is the final tell — 'lifetime against defects in materials and workmanship' is a real promise; 'lifetime of the product' is a circle. The gear that impressed us enough to stock always survives this reading.
